Nyika Plateau National Park

Located in northeast Zambia on the border with Malawi, this 31-square-mile (80 km2) park includes the small Zambian portion of the Nyika Plateau. This is a good park to visit for a keen naturalist or anyone wishing to escape the summer heat of the valleys below. Due to the high altitude, night tempera¬tures sometimes drop below freezing May-September.

Montane grassland and relic montane forest dominate the scene. A great variety of orchid and butterfly species are present along with Moloney’s monkey, blue monkey, civet and a number of other small mammals. Leopard, serval, bushbuck, reedbuck, blue duiker and klipspringer are present but rarely seen. Several species of birds not found elsewhere in Zambia may be seen. The best time for bird watching is November-June.
